Loneliness

To feel lonely is to be overwhelmed by an unbearable feeling of separateness, at a very deep level. To some degree, it is a totally normal emotion, a part of growing up. At birth, we all start the process of separation, the growth towards becoming individuals.

"I woke up one morning and realised there was nobody there - that I no longer existed. I'd always been a mother and now that role was over, I was completely empty."

To define loneliness is simply not just one thing, there are many degrees and causes . Its possible to talk about three different kinds of loneliness: circumstantial, development and internal

There are many reasons why people will feel depressed such as

Moving to a new environment, and having to start all over again.

Single parents will find it hard to raise a child on there own and this will also cause no time for a social life

The elderly also feel lonely when there is no one there for them especially when there are in care homes, and see their fellow friends pass away

Lone carers-The people who look after the elderly can become lonely, they become exhausted and their social life and friends can gradually fade away, as carers may not have time for themselves

Depression

Depression is an illness. Professions in the field of Health use the words depression, depressive illness or clinical depression. It is not the same kind of common experience such as feeling unhappy, miserable or fed up for certain period of time.

This type of feeling can be so severe that they can interfere with you day to day life and can last for weeks or even months.

Depression is quite common and about 1 in 10 people will experience depression at some point in their life.

It is more likely for women to suffer from depression more than men, 1 in 4 women will require treatment for depression at some point in their lives compared to 1 in 10 men.

Depression can be experienced by people of any age, which include children. Studies have shown that 4% of children aged 5-16 in the UK are affected by depression.

People with a family history of depression are more likely to experience depression themselves. Depression affects people in many ways and can cause a wide variety of physical, psychological (mental) and social symptoms.

A few people still think that depression is not a real illness and that it is a form of weakness or admission of failure. This is simply not true. Depression is a real illness with real effects, and it is certainly not a sign of failure.

With the right treatment and support, most people can make a full recovery from depression.
